Anna Gibson
2nd October - 1st November 2025
The two disciplines of painting and ceramics are a world apart, but my approach to them is constant. A lump of clay, a length of canvas, a sheet of paper, and some collage scraps give me a beginning. Then, my attention is focused on how I can express myself through them. My approach is about coming nearer to something in quality, character, time or condition. I mostly start working without a clear idea of what Iām creating, simply responding to what is happening on the surface. This frequently means addition and subtraction, and the work has to go through many stages before the tussle is won, or is benched until another day. Surface, line, layers, marks and form are my language, my voice. The work falls somewhere between realism and abstraction.
Anna Gibson is a Lancastrian by birth and has lived in Yorkshire since 1999. She left her home town of Bolton in the 80s to study for her degree in Multidisciplinary Design at Staffordshire University, graduating in 1985. This broad course allowed her to explore a variety of disciplines before settling into hand ceramics. In the late 90s, after an extended break for her growing family, she returned to creative practice slowly. Over years of feathering her art into family life and working humdrum jobs, the desire to become more immersed in her own work grew. Exhibitions and workshops followed as both facilitator and participant. After a number of relocations, she settled in West Yorkshire and exhibited her work in numerous small to medium-sized exhibitions. She currently has a studio at Linden Mill in Hebden Bridge and has worked there since 2019.
