The Sap and Sinew I Held

Florence Hutchinson

Thursday 4th June 2026 - Saturday 28th June 2026

Florence Hutchinson is a  multidisciplinary artist and poet living in Hebden Bridge. She works with mixed media, abstract painting, drawing, spoken word and performance to explore female experiences relating to sexuality, defiance, shame, and societal/capitalist pressure. Additionally, much of her writing draws inspiration from the brutality of the Calderdale landscape, growing up in a post-industrial town, folklore, myth and fragmented memory.

Florence will be showing a sequence of abstract oil paintings, from 2025-2026. She works spontaneously, in a multi-layered process of visceral mark-making, often drawn by emotional release. She creates a material dialogue using heavy-handed oil paint, cold wax medium, charcoal and ink.

Florence will also be showing her ongoing filmed performance, titled BURN(OUT), an autobiographical non-linear ghost story. The film is a study of viscera, the body as a site of re-invention, performance as catharsis and defiance, and embodied engagement with trauma, grief and desire.

TW: Pregnancy loss, blood, drugs, nudity. Viewer discretion is advised.

Preview will be held at In a land Gallery, Thursday 4th June - 6pm onwards.
