The Fool is a project formulated by walking to areas of folkloric interest in the Calder Valley. The book weaves together photography and writing to trace both personal and physical journeys through the landscape. The photographs you see were taken over a number of years, as footsteps followed paths laced with stories. Throughout that time the life of the artist changed dramatically and each walk became a part of a grieving process, an exploration of home and an anchor in a storm. The writing is inspired by the landscape as guardian, mother and friend, a celebration of it’s uncontrollable presence.
This work maps my journey through the landscape of Calderdale, laced with tales of hobs and witches, coiners and rebels. I explored the place I call home and the stories and characters that helped shape me at a time when the threads of who I was were beginning to unravel. I found myself teetering upon a precipice and had no choice but to take a step.
