Join award-winning playwright Sadie Clark to explore some of the basic principles and techniques of writing for the stage.

Through guided discussions and a series of writing exercises this workshop will introduce you to four of the fundamental aspects of writing a play: dialogue, character, dramatic action and structure.

This is a hands-on (or pens-down!) workshop with an emphasis on generating ideas, developing characters and writing dramatic scenes. The workshop is designed to introduce participants to writing for the stage and is open to all, whether you have written in some format before, or not at all.

About the course leader:

Sadie Clark is an award-winning writer and performer based in West Yorkshire. Her writing explores big themes through an intimate lens, blending whip-smart observations with relatable emotional insights.

Her debut play ALGORITHMS, a ‘bisexual Bridget Jones for the online generation’, sold out at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2019 before transferring to Soho Theatre (2020, 2021) and the Park Theatre (2024). ALGORITHMS won the TV Foundation’s Netflix Supported ‘Stage to Screen’ New Voice Award (2020), and was long-listed for the Tony Craze Award (2018). In 2021 Audible commissioned Sadie to adapt ALGORITHMS into a six-part original audio series which she starred in, alongside Alison Steadman, Desiree Birch and Joe Thomas. This audio adaptation, released in 2022, won a Silver ARIAS for ‘Best Drama’ (2023) and was shortlisted for the BBC Audio Drama Awards (2023).

As an actor Sadie has performed at Soho Theatre, Pleasance Courtyard, Omnibus Theatre, The Nottingham Playhouse and the Mercury Theatre. As a writer she has been part of  the Soho Theatre Writers Lab (2018), The Mercury Theatre Writer’s Programme (2022) and High Tide’s ‘New Writer’s Week’ at the New Wolsey Theatre (2022).
